What do German-language media mean when they complain about “identity politics”?

One of the topics that’s fascinated me since I delved into it in order to write Cancel Culture Transfer is: what exactly do Europeans mean when they complain about “identity politics”? Where did they get the vocabulary to talk about this? So I decided to figure this out for myself. As a first step, I wrote this short piece for the Swiss online journal Geschichte der Gegenwart — it’s in German and pretty focused on the history of the term.
